Homer Ray Lewis, 84, passed Saturday June 21, 2025, in Bowie, Texas surrounded by family. Homer was born in Belcherville, Texas, March 15, 1941, to Willis Homer Lewis and Mary Bell (Short) Lewis.
Homer grew up in Stoneburg, Texas where he graduated from Gold-Burg in 1959. Here, he met his high school sweet-heart Bertie Jean Caraway whom he later married on August 10, 1960. Homer and Jean raised 3 children, and have seen many grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren in their 65 years of marriage.
Homer spent his life farming, ranching and working in the oil field. He started working in the oil field for Harold Reynolds right out of high school and then in 1961 working for the McCalls feeding cattle. When he started for Hinds Clark in 1970, they moved to the farm that they still call home. In 1998 he started working for Joe Corpening and transitioned from ranch hand to being a roustabout in the oil field. He continued to work for the Corpening's until 2024.
When Homer wasn't working or helping raise their kids he was giving back to his community. He served 29 years as a member and President of the Gold-Burg School Board, even donated his time driving the school bus for sporting events. He was elected and served on the Oak Hill Cemetery Association for many years, sat on the board for the Silver Strings Dance Hall and made many smaller contributions over the years.
