Elvin Lee Gentry, a steadfast and faithful Christian man, passed away on February 25, 2026, in Nocona, Texas, at the age of 87. Born on May 1, 1938, in Boston, Arkansas, Elvin lived a life marked by kindness, strength, and a commitment to his family, faith, and community.
Elvin dedicated his entire professional career to banking, where he served with distinction at First Texas Bank in Georgetown from 1976 until his well-earned retirement in 2000 as bank president. His legacy in banking is complemented by his sharp intellect and strong, quiet, humble leadership, which fostered the growth of those around him.
Elvin was a proud graduate of Nocona High School. Shortly after school, he married the love of his life, Mary (Stouder). Their marriage exemplified devotion and partnership, lasting through her passing in 2018.
Elvin was a loving father to his three sons: Lonnie Gentry and his wife Lynne, Carey Gentry and his wife Judy, and Tim Gentry and his wife Melissa. He took great pride in his family, which expanded to include grandchildren Todd, Megan, Cara, Eric, Tyler, and Luke, as well as fourteen great-grandchildren. His spirit, faith, and calm, quiet, consistent outlook on life will remain an everlasting influence in their lives.
Elvin's love for woodworking was unmatched; he spent many hours in craftsmanship, turning numerous wooden bowls that he generously gifted to friends and loved ones. Notably, he even built his own casket, reflecting his thoughtful nature and resourcefulness. His passions extended beyond woodworking to the great outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting along with the joys and hard work of farming and ranching, particularly working with horses and longhorn cattle. He cherished reading and maintained a room filled with books, demonstrating his lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
Elvin lived a life of faith, He was a committed Christian. Most recently, he had been a devoted member at the Nocona Church of Christ. The empty seat in his pew - front and center! - serves as a reminder of his joy in serving God.
He is survived by his sons, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother Carol Wayne Gentry, and a large extended family who will miss his presence deeply. Elvin was preceded in death by his parents, JC and Elva (Thurman) Gentry, his wife Mary, his brother Jerry Gentry, and great-grandson Gunner Pearson.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on March 8, 2026, at Nocona Cemetery, located at 1605 West Pine Street, Nocona, TX 76255, under the direction of Scott- Morris Funeral Home, and with his grandson Eric giving the eulogy. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Elvin are invited to come together to honor his memory.
